GREECE SAILING REGION: DODECANESE

There are four charter marinas in the Dodecanese, from North to South they are Marina Samos, Marina Kos and two marinas on Rhodes – Marina Rhodes and Marina Mandraki.

How to reach Dodecanese islands

By plane: There are three airports in the Dodecanese that are connected with international charter flights during the summer season: Rhodes, Kos, and Karpathos. These three airports are also very well connected with domestic flights to Athens. Other two airports, on Kalymnos and Leros, offer only domestic flights.

By ferry: Dodecanese islands can also be reached by ferry. Larger islands are connected with the mainland port of Piraeus. Considering the distance between Piraeus and Dodecanese the trip can be a little bit tiresome. However, if you decide to fly to the Dodecanese there are regular ferries that operate on a daily basis between all islands in the archipelago.

Islands can also be reached from Turkey. Rhodes town is connected to with Marmaris and Kos town to Bodrum.

Highlights

Rhodes town

Being on the crossroads of many different cultures during its past, the town of Rhodes is rich with cultural heritage. Its old town is clearly separated from the newer part by ancient walls. If you take a walk by its center you will notice the remains from classical, medieval, Ottoman and Italian era. Rhodes new part of town, however, offers you a great variety of shops, bars, and nightlife.

Kalymnos

The greenest island of Dodecanese group surrounded by mountains and famous for pink oleanders. If you are looking for adrenalin than you should definitely try rock climbing and if the beaches are what you prefer then you won’t be disappointed. The island locals have been living from sponge fishing in the past and even though that activity had disappeared you can find many sponge sellers on the streets.

Lipsi

The small island of Lipsi is still peaceful and not so touristic destination due to its remote location. You will find many deserted beaches with crystal water on this island. If you are looking for the unique gastronomic experience than you shouldn’t miss trying goat cheese called ‘mzithra cheese’ which is made from sea water and goat’s milk.

Volcano in Nisyros

Nisyros is an island famous for Geek’s youngest volcano. Even though this volcano has not been active last 25.000 years it is still considered as dormant. An island is also an ideal place for privacy and relaxing.
